Portland is on fire, and not the crazy burning down the house fires that destroyed the city in the 1700s and 1800s. A number of publications, from Forbes, to Bon Appetit, and Outside have selected Portland as one of the best places to live in America. Come discover what we have known for years: that Portland is an awesome town. Your weekend bike tour of Portland will show you the best of this amazing city.
Many thanks to the Greater Portland Convention & Visitors Bureau for permission to use their photo of Portland Headlight and Compass Park in downtown Portland.
Leaders will meet you at the Inn in Portland
We meet at 2:00 pm at our inn in the heart of Portland’s beautiful and historic West End. Our weekend will begin with a ride around the Back Cove, the northern end of the Portland Peninsula, where all us locals go to run and bike. We will continue riding along the shores of Casco Bay and to the ferry terminal. We hop the quick ferry to Peaks Island for a 5-mile spin around one of Portland’s many Island communities.
After a wonderful breakfast we cycle back to the ferry terminal and grab a morning ferry to Chebeague Island, one of the larger islands in Casco Bay. Great views, farmland, and a charming island community greet us as we cycle around the island. We enjoy a picnic lunch before catching a ferry to Cousin’s Island. We cycle Cousin’s Island, take yet another ferry to the mainland, and enjoy an optional ride back to Portland through the upscale town of Falmouth.
Today we head south of Portland and visit 4 lighthouses. We begin by cycling to Bug Light Park where we walk the causeway to Bug Light and explore the Liberty Ship Park. Then we pedal to the Spring Point Light and its quaint little museum. Our ride then carries us along Shore Road, one of Portland’s most exclusive addresses and onto the famous Portland Head Light. From Portland Head Light we cycle to 2 Lights State Park, famously painted by Winslow Homer. Enjoy a lobster roll over looking the ocean and choose either a shuttle, or to cycle back to town and the conclusion of our weekend.
