OVERVIEW

A trip specially designed for our road bike-loving friends, Cycling Coastal Roads, offers six days of riding along the coast. This tour combines some bucket list rides, like the “Park Loop Road” of Acadia National Park, with quiet coastal roads perfect for cycling.  Along the way, there is ample time to enjoy an espresso or ramble on the rocky coast.

Pick up/ Drop Off Portland Maine

Day 1: Discover a Fishing Village

Leaders will meet you at the visitors center on the Portland Waterfront at 9:00 am for the transfer to Clark Island.  After orientation and a picnic lunch, it is time to hop on the bikes. Today’s ride takes to the fishing village of Port Clyde. Enjoy the views of this bustling harbor before pedaling back to the inn.  Take some time to explore the paths of Clark Island and enjoy dinner overlooking the ocean.

Day 2: Owls, Head, Rockland, and Camden

Begin your ride exploring the quiet town of Port Clyde before cycling to Birch Point State Park and the spectacular Owls Head Light as it stands guard over Penobscot Bay.  Your ride then takes you to the eclectic village of Rockland, home to the Farnsworth Museum of Art, which features an extensive collection of the art of the Wyeth Family, The Island Institute dedicated to preserving Maine’s Island communities, and many charming shops and galleries.

Day 3 Islesboro Island

The early morning ferry carries us to Islesboro, where stately pines and 40 room cottages serve as a backdrop for our cycling tour around one of Maine’s prettiest islands. Long and thin Islesboro often offers ocean views on both sides of the road. We will pause for a short hike around Pendelton Point before cycling up the island and visiting the Grindle Point Lighthouse.

Day 4: Cycling the Camden Hills

The rolling hills of Camden offer miles of riding on quiet country roads. Follow these roads through the summer community of Bayside and into the coastal town of Belfast. A little artsier than Camden, Belfast is a great place to enjoy the waterfront and get to know some local artists. In the afternoon, we transfer to Bar Harbor, the gateway to Acadia National Park.

DAY 5 – THE SCHOODIC PENINSULA

Today you enjoy a unique ferry ride across Frenchman Bay to Winter Harbor and the Schoodic Peninsula. You experience the dramatic power of the open ocean as it crashes along the Schoodic’s rugged shore before cycling to a real lobstering community.

  • Cycling Options: 16 or 35 miles Elevation gain 900-1671 ft

DAY 6 – CYCLING ACADIA NATIONAL PARK

You end a memorable week cycling Acadia National Park’s famous Park Loop Road as it winds along the shore and ends with an optional climb up Cadillac Mountain before a noon transfer to Portland.
